Wrinkled film is a common issue when using a DTF Printer.
Before or during printing, the DTF film may develop wrinkles, waves, or raised areas. This can cause the design to print out of position, look distorted, or lose detail. In more serious cases, the uneven film may interfere with the Printhead and increase the risk of a head strike.
The most common causes include:
- Incorrect film tension
- Film that is not secured properly
- A damaged or uneven film roll
- High humidity
- Moisture absorbed by the film
- Excessive stretching during installation
How to Fix Wrinkled DTF Film
Adjust the Film Tension
When installing the film, adjust the tension control so the film stays flat and evenly stretched.
The film should not be loose, sagging, or moving from side to side. At the same time, do not pull it too tightly.
Check the film roll as well. A bent, damaged, or uneven roll can cause the film to feed incorrectly and develop wrinkles during printing.
Before starting a full job, feed a short section through the machine and confirm that it stays flat.
Control the Room Humidity
Keep the printing area dry and well ventilated.
A humidity level of around 40% to 60% is a useful working range. Excess moisture can cause the film to absorb water, expand, and develop waves or wrinkles.
If the film has already absorbed moisture, place it in a drying cabinet before printing.
A suggested starting point is:
- Temperature: 50°C
- Time: 30 minutes
Allow the film to return to a stable temperature before loading it into the printer.
Avoid Overstretching the Film
Handle the film carefully during installation.
Pulling too hard can permanently stretch or deform part of the film. Once that happens, adjusting the tension may not completely remove the wrinkles.
Support the film roll while loading it, keep the edges aligned, and avoid folding or pressing on the printable surface.
Final Check Before Printing
Before sending the job, confirm that:
- The film is flat
- The tension is even
- The roll is not damaged
- The film edges are aligned
- There are no raised or loose areas
- The film feeds smoothly through the machine
A quick check before printing can prevent distorted designs, wasted film, and possible Printhead damage.
